Cat tests positive for rabies
      The Chesterfield County Police Department's Animal Control Division impounded a stray cat in the county courthouse area on June 27. The cat has since tested positive for the rabies virus. Animal control officials are reminding all county residents to ensure their pets have current rabies vaccinations and to contain their pets on their property.

Bottle bombs shake neighborhood
      During the early morning hours of July 1, police responded to several 911 calls that reported gunshots being fired in the 1500 block of Crawford Wood Drive. But when they arrived in the usually quiet neighborhood shortly after 1 a.m., the police found several exploded bottle bombs. They have no suspects at this time.

Political refugee convicted in hate-mail scam case
      A Haitian political refugee who was an employee of a Chesterfield church has been convicted by a federal jury of scamming the church with fake hate mail. Frantz Cadet, 48, was found guilty on June 30 of nine counts of mail fraud and lying to an FBI agent. He could get as much as 185 years in prison at his sentencing hearing, which is set for Sept. 29.

Two more prostitution charges
      A man and a woman were caught in the act of prostitution by an observant police officer patrolling in the Jefferson Davis Highway area. Just after midnight on June 25, Meagan D. Shell, 24, of the 2300 block of Arcadia Avenue, was charged with prostitution, and Douglas R. Grams, 58, of the 6000 block of Jefferson Avenue, was charged with solicitation of prostitution.

Man arrested for sexual crime against a minor
      Barry S. Rush, 32, of the 3300 block of Nuttree Woods Place, was charged on June 27 with having carnal knowledge of a child, 13- 15 years old. Because the victim is a juvenile, no further information is available.

Man shows too much in window
      Robert L. Wood III, 43, of the 14500 block of Charters Bluff Trail, was charged on June 24 with public indecency after he was observed masturbating in front of a window in his home.

Attorney reprimanded
      On May 27, Renay Melitta Fariss, an attorney whose address of record is 10107 Krause Road in Chesterfield, was issued a public reprimand by the Virginia State Bar Third District Committee, Section I. The reprimand accuses Fariss of misconduct, breach of client confidentiality and "presenting or threatening criminal or other charges to obtain an advantage or to harass.

Surge in panhandling arrests
      Some recent arrests add to the evidence that times are tough all over. On June 24, an officer on patrol arrested Edwin Brown, 30, of the 800 block of S. Pine Street, William E. Brown, 26, also of the 800 block of S. Pine Street, Shannon Ellison, 34, of the 2700 block of W. Chestnut Street, and Jeffrey Rappa, 26, of the 2000 block of W.

Convicted educator seeks dismissal
      The former principal of Joseph T. Mastin High School at Bon Air Juvenile Correctional Center asked Chesterfield County Circuit Court Judge Frederick G. Rockwell III to set aside several guilty verdicts against him.
