High school student receives national honor

Photo courtesy of Gretchen Simard Cosby High School student Kaitie Sisk, a rising junior, has been selected for membership in the National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS). Membership in the exclusive organization will offer Sisk access to scholarship opportunities, academic competitions, participation in programs offered by the NSHSS’ educational partners and more.

Since 2002, NSHSS has recognized academic excellence at the high school level. There are currently 530,000 members in more than 160 countries.

JES, a foundation repair and waterproofing company in Chester, recently presented old and tattered American flags to Chester-based Boy Scout Troop 2815. JES collected the flags from the community during May and June. The flags were properly retired by Troop 2815 during its annual Flag Retirement Ceremony on July 10 at Albright Scout Reservation in Chesterfield. The River City Rattlers 8U travel baseball team of Midlothian won the 8U championship in the 2010 Huguenot Memorial Day Showdown. Team members included Ethan Ianuzzi, Matthew Tuch, Josh Abrams, Colby Coppenger, Ethan Smith, Myles Weeks, Taylor Mangigian, Carson Fuller, Jack Hall, Tyler Watkins, Nicholas Ritchie. The team was coached by Brett Mangigian, Troy Coppenger, Gary Watkins and Vance Fuller.

Little has over 29 years of graphic design experience specializing in print publication design and website development. CCWA is the workforce development partnership between J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College and John Tyler Community College serving the workforce training needs of four cities and 12 counties in Central Virginia.

Grandmaster Y.K. Kim, founder of Martial Arts World, with Chesterfield locations at 4930 East Millridge Parkway, 11804 Perdue Springs Court and 9401 Midlothian Turnpike, and author of “The New American Dream” and “U.S. National Exercise,” will hold a Life Self-defense Seminar on Saturday, Aug. 7, from 9 a.m-1 p.m., at the Powhatan High School auditorium, 1800 Jude’s Ferry Road. Individual achievements

Veronica Rohrmoser, Miss Tidewater, of Chesterfield, and Victoria Maiden, Miss Chesterfield, were among the contestants in the Miss Virginia Pageant.

James E. Dickens and Andrew J. Dickens of Troop 2890, sponsored by the Brandermill Church; John Adrian Wilhelm Jr. of Troop 2880, sponsored by Beulah United Methodist Church; Timothy Reardon Shaw of Troop 876, sponsored by Mount Pisgah United Methodist Church; and Nathan S. Saxman and William Matthew Rhea of Troop 1891, sponsored by Bon Air United Methodist Church, have attained the rank of Eagle Scout.

Chesterfield resident and psychiatrist Anita Binder has written a picture book for children, “Bananas and Bears.” The book is available through PublishAmerica at www.publishamerica.net/product92707.html.

A painting by Midlothian artist Robert L. Caldwell has been included in the 2010 Art and the Animal, the Society of Animal Artists’ 50th annual exhibition of the world’s best wildlife artists at the San Diego Natural History Museum, from Sept. 4-Oct. 31.
