Historical society publishes book on churchyard cemeteries

“Chesterfield Churchyards – Gravestone Inscriptions & Burials of Chesterfield County,” a book about the county’s churchyard cemeteries, is being published by the Cemetery Committee of the Chesterfield Historical Society of Virginia (CHSV). The book was compiled by the committee and edited by Rachel Baker Lipowicz. It includes inscriptions from all church burial grounds within the historical boundaries of Chesterfield County. The names of more than 7,000 people are listed. The listings from two memorial gardens and two family cemeteries that adjoin churches are also included. There are photographs of each site that has markers remaining, and information from death certificates, church records and obituaries has been used to identify unmarked graves.

There will be a limited printing of the book. Proceeds from sales will be used to publish the committee’s next work, which will be about family and community cemeteries that are not church-related.

The book is available by pre-order through the CHSV office. Make checks payable to CHSV and mail to P.O. Box 40, Chesterfield, VA 23832. The cost of the book is $22.05, which includes sales tax, through Nov. 30. Those who would like the book mailed to them should add $5 for shipping. After Nov. 30, the price will rise to $26.25 per book, including sales tax.
