ArtHaus project to benefit Haitian earthquake victims

The pins were made by ArtHaus students along with Robious Middle School’s Interact Club members as a part of Sarah Benson’s Leadership and International Relations capstone project. A senior at James River High and assistant at ArtHaus, Benson developed this community-based fundraising project to bring together her love of art, kids and missions.

Athletics Manchester High School freshman Lyberty Anderson overcame a shoulder injury last fall to win the Virginia High School League Girls State Open. The VHSL contest featured the best female golfers from Groups A, AA and AAA. Anderson shot an 8-under par 136 to claim a two-stroke victory and the state championship. She is the first Central Region player to win the state title since the Girls Open began in 2002. Her two-day score broke the tournament record by two strokes. She also won the individual state title, topping all entrants – boys and girls – with one of the lowest winning scores in regional history. Her scoring average is 34.8 for nine holes and 71.8 for 18 holes. In addition, Anderson is also a two-time Richmond Women’s Golf Association champion.
Education Goddard Schools in the Midlothian area are accepting applications for the annual $10,000 Anthony A. Martino Memorial Scholarship, given to one Goddard School alumnus each year to help with college or university tuition. The application deadline is Feb. 11. Exchange students from China, Spain, Brazil, Germany, Serbia, Slovakia and Thailand volunteered four days during the holiday break to work with 200 elementary-school students at Camp Thunderbird at Pocahontas State Park. The teens served lunch, helped kids make crafts and played games with them, while sharing their culture and values. The students are part of the Council on International Education Exchange program. The organization is looking for host families to take visiting students into their homes. Chester resident Jasmine Walker, a student at James Madison University, participated in an all-day Habitat for Humanity project in West Virginia as part of JMU’s Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Week. Fourteen musical students were selected from Tomahawk Creek Middle School to be part of the All Districts Band. They include eighth-graders Colleen Averill, Laurence Carlucci, Caitlin Cline, clarinet, Anthony Cavanaugh and Michael Lindenfeld, bassoon, Hope Damico, alto saxophone, Jami Hagood, tuba, Ian Krauss, oboe, Matthew Matherley, euphonium, Danny Oughton, trumpet, and Manny Rivera, bass clarinet. Seventh-grade musicians selected include Cameron Brewer, bassoon, Julia DiMartino, trumpet, and Kyle Running, percussion. Judge Bonnie Davis and Del. Jennifer McClellan, both recipients of a Chesterfield Public Education Foundation Bravo! Award, recently visited with seniors at Matoaca High School. Virginia State University received a $1 million donation from Thompson Hospitality Services, the largest minority-owned food service company in the U.S. Thompson family members graduated from VSU. The Chesterfield campus of Bryant & Stratton College has been selected as the Richmond area’s only site where eligible candidates may sit for the National Association of Legal Assistants’ Certified Legal Assistant or Certified Paralegal certification exams this spring. The exam will be held in May and will be open to paralegal students from all area colleges and universities, as well as eligible legal professionals seeking certification status. The certification exam will be held at the school’s main campus, 8141 Hull Street Road. The college offers a “boot camp”-style intensive preparation for the exam three times each year. The Bailey Bridge Middle School Trooper Team received the Youth Philanthropist of the Year award, sponsored by the Central Virginia chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals National Philanthropy Day. After reading a novel called “The Ultimate Gift,” eighth-grade students completed a series of community service activities, raising $1,038 for Noah’s Children. The organization is Central Virginia’s only pediatric and palliative program, offering comprehensive care to infants, children and adolescents diagnosed with life-threatening or life-limiting illnesses. Chesterfield Technical Center teacher Rita Griffith was selected as the Association for Career and Technical Education’s Health Science Education Division Teacher of the Year.
