Chesterfield Food Bank has company

Your article about the Chesterfield Food Bank [“Food for the Soul,” Dec. 24] was interesting. Since we have a food pantry in the Bainbridge area of South Richmond, we would like to know how they operate.

We have been in operation for at least 50 years. Our director has been with us for over 23 years. We operate on a low budget, have one employee and many volunteers. Because we ask questions of those wanting or needing food, we do not give away food to people who really do not need it so there is enough for those who really do. So many social agencies don’t ask questions, and unfortunately many will “scam” those agencies.

We usually do give food to those coming for the first time and give them information that might help their situations as we have a long list of agencies in Richmond. We also tell them when they come again to be sure to have a referral from one of those agencies.

We would like to see the budgets of other pantries and how many employees they have and what questions they ask of people who come to them for help.

Perhaps you would like to see our pantry and ask our director questions so that we might get extra publicity.
