Local soldier part of historic combat mission

As a footnote to “Bubba’s Story” by Michael Buettner [Dec. 31]:

The 306th Bomb Group to which Lewis F. Ayscue was assigned during World War II later became the 918th Bomb Group in the popular 1948 novel, “Twelve O’Clock High” and subsequent (1949) motion picture of the same name (nominated for four Academy Awards) starring Gregory Peck.

Authors Beirne Lay Jr. and Sy Bartlett (both of whom flew numerous combat missions over Europe) created the 918th Bomb Group but many of the individuals featured were patterned after officers and enlisted men of the 306th.

Assigned to the 8th Air Force and stationed at Thurleigh, England, the 306th flew more than 300 combat missions (October 1942-April 1945) and dropped some 22,500 tons of bombs.
