Reports of rape rise in late April, early May

CRIME WATCH
Michael Buettner

The Chesterfield County Police Department’s daily reports of crime incidents provided to the media include large numbers of incidents – such as reports of stray animals, assaults, traffic violations and shoplifting – that are not included in Crime Watch.

In most cases, Crime Watch omits those incidents simply because there are so many of them or because no details are included in the reports. But there’s one category we don’t usually include, mainly out of concern for protecting the victim’s identity: rape.

According to figures provided by local police for the most recent Virginia State Police

Crime in Virginia” report, there were 52 rapes in Chesterfield in 2013, an average of exactly one per week.

That’s why a recent rash of these attacks in the county caught our attention: six rapes reported across the county over a nine-day period at the end of April and beginning of May:

• Thursday, April 23

• Friday, April 24 (two reports)

• Sunday, April 26

• Tuesday, April 28

• Friday, May 1

In addition, one delayed report was filed on April 30 for a rape that occurred on Jan. 3 of this year.
