Heroin ODs on the rise

Police responded to five heroin overdoses throughout the county late last month.

The department just began listing heroin overdoses separately from other drug overdoses on its incident reports distributed to the media.

“Heroin has become a significant issue in the region and the nation in recent years,” said Liz Caroon, the department’s public information coordinator, in an email. “You’re seeing these on the media summary because we’ve created a new category in our records system just for heroin overdoses. Previously, all drug overdoses were included in the same category. The new category will allow us to better track heroin overdoses.”

Asked if the five overdoses were tied to a bad batch of heroin, Caroon said, “There’s no indication this was a bad batch. It’s not uncommon to see several overdoses in a relatively short period of time, and then none for a longer period of time.”

Heroin overdoses happened at the following locations:

• 12300 block of Jefferson Davis Highway in the Home Depot parking lot on Nov. 25 around midnight.

• 8700 block of Cardiff Road at a Bexley residence on Nov. 26 around 2:20 p.m.

• 10200 block of Ronaldton Road at a Forest Acres residence on Nov. 26 at 4 p.m.
