‘Lord of the Rings’ star stumps for Clinton

James Haskins/Chesterfield Observer Chesterfield received a little star treatment this weekend when actor Sean Astin visited the Chesterfield County Democratic Committee headquarters in Midlothian.

Astin, who played Mikey in “The Goonies,” the title role in “Rudy” and Samwise Gamgee in the “Lord of the Rings” films, was in town to stump for Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton. The American actor – who is the son of actress Patty Duke and the adopted son of actor John Astin – also stopped at Alamo BBQ in Richmond and Stories Comics in Bon Air.

Man uninjured after driving into pond

A Chesterfield County man is uninjured after driving his car into a pond on Sunday, according to a media report.

Sometime between 1 and 4 a.m., the man drove his Mazda sedan off the roadway and into a pond in the 3800 block of Curtis Street. The driver was able to free himself from the vehicle, which was later spotted by a passerby around 11 a.m. The driver told police that the accident happened when he lost control of the vehicle after looking down to light a cigarette.

The driver was charged with reckless driving.

Police seek public comment on operations and policies

The Chesterfield County Police Department is inviting public comment on its policies, procedures, management, operations and support services as part of its accreditation through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement.

Assessors from CALEA will arrive on Nov. 15 to examine the police department to verify that it meets the commission’s standards. The accreditation process is a voluntary one. Members of the community are invited to offer comments at a public information session on Nov. 15 at 6 p.m. The session will be held in the Eanes-Pittman Public Safety Training Center, 6610 Public Safety Way. Community members may also offer comments by telephone on Nov. 15 at 318-8341 between the hours of 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
