Police investigate shooting deaths

County police are investigating an apparent murder-suicide.

At about 6:30 a.m. on May 19, police responded to check on the welfare of two residents at a home in the 14900 block of Spruce Avenue. Officers found Charlene Leslie Alderman, 51, and her husband, Ewell Thomas Alderman Jr., 51, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

At this point, police said evidence suggests Ewell Alderman Jr. shot his wife and then turned the gun on himself.

Body found in Appomattox River

County police have identified the body of a man found on May 17 in the Appomattox River. The man has been identified as David E. Browder, 51, of Petersburg.

Officers responded to a report of a body in the river at about 4:30 p.m. Browder, who was pronounced dead at the scene, was pulled to the shore near Johnson Alley and Grove Avenue in Petersburg. Foul play is not suspected.

Crash kills pedestrian on Hull Street Road

County police are investigating a crash that killed a male pedestrian on May 15 in the 7100 block of Hull Street Road.

At about 10:49 p.m., a 2011 Toyota Tundra was traveling west on Hull Street Road when it struck Robert L. Verstreate Jr., 54, who was crossing the road.

Verstreate, of the 2600 block of Wayside Drive, was transported to Chippenham Hospital, where he later died. The driver of the vehicle was not injured.

Police arrest former restaurant server for credit card theft

A former server at Kickback Jack’s on Midlothian Turnpike has been arrested and charged with 19 counts of stealing customers’ credit card information to make fraudulent purchases.

Jaquade C. Carty, 21, of the 2500 block of Bainbridge Street in Richmond, is accused of stealing credit card information from more than a dozen customers while working at the restaurant. Carty was first arrested by county police on March 19 and charged with two counts of credit card theft, according to court documents. She was arrested again on May 12 for 17 more counts of credit card theft. She has been released on bond pending hearings.
