Driver dies in head-on collision on I-95

A Chester man was killed in a head-on collision early Wednesday morning on Interstate 95 near Ruffin Mill Road. The accident, which caused a tractor-trailer to swerve and hit a Jersey wall, blocked traffic and led to backups for several hours.

Jailyn Richard Allred, 20, of Chester, was transported to Southside Regional Medical Center, where he later died. Police say Allred was driving a 2003 Saturn sedan in the wrong direction (driving north in the southbound lanes of I-95) and struck a Nissan Altima driven by a female motorist north of exit 52. In an attempt to avoid the collision, the driver of the tractor-trailer made an evasive maneuver and struck the Jersey wall and came to stop across the median, partially blocking the southbound and northbound lanes for several hours. Police responded to the scene at approximately 4:05 a.m.

The female driver was taken to Southside Regional Medical Center with serious injuries. The driver of the tractor-trailer suffered minor injuries, according to police.

Alcohol is being considered a factor in the accident, according to police. The investigation is ongoing.
