Local art teacher receives state award


Sarah Matthews Sarah Matthews Watkins Elementary School’s Sarah Matthews was recently named the 2018 Virginia Art Educator of the Year during the Virginia Art Education Association’s annual state conference. Known for her dynamic style of teaching and her professional development opportunities that help other outstanding art teachers, Matthews has presented at state and national art conferences and has received multiple awards, including the Golden Apple Award for Teaching Excellence.

In 2001, Matthews was the Central Region Virginia Elementary Art Teacher of the Year and the VAEA State Elementary Art Teacher of the Year. In addition, she has been involved with art curriculum development, mentoring, and has supervised more than 20 student teachers. In addition to teaching, Matthews is also an accomplished artist with murals in public and private schools, restaurants, hospitals, businesses and more than 100 private residences in Virginia, North Carolina and Florida.

Chesterfield County Public Schools recently received the 2017 Greater Richmond Fit4Kids Trailblazer Award. The school division was selected because of the adoption of a comprehensive School Board wellness policy that includes physical, psychological and social-emotional well-being.
