Man killed in single vehicle crash

A man was killed in a single-vehicle crash at the interchange of state Route 288 and Iron Bridge Road on Jan. 15.

Virginia State Police responded to the crash, which took place at the southbound Route 288 ramp to eastbound Iron Bridge Road, at approximately 3:50 p.m. A preliminary investigation reveals that Joseph Christopher Ward, 29, of the 3000 block of Waddington Drive, was driving a 2013 Chevrolet Silverado southbound on 288 when he veered right and struck the guardrail. The impact caused Ward to veer left, striking the guardrail on the left shoulder.

Ward veered right again and traveled along the right shoulder guardrail at the exit to Iron Bridge Road. When Ward reached the end of the guardrail, he ran off the road, striking a tree. Ward was the lone occupant of the vehicle, and succumbed to his injuries at the scene. He was wearing his seatbelt.

The crash remains under investigation.
