Credit union branches out

ASH DANIEL ASH DANIEL Chesterfield Federal Credit Union and Chesterfield County Public Schools held a ribbon cutting ceremony, left, last week for the grand opening of the student-run Monarch credit union branch at Meadowbrook High. Students who are instructed and mentored on how to run a bank branch will manage this branch inside of the school. Student jobs will include serving as tellers, bookkeepers, computer operators, branch managers and marketing managers. Meadowbrook joins James River High as the only two Chesterfield County high schools to have student-run credit union branches with Chesterfield Federal Credit Union.

A Go Fund Me page has been created to help local students with the cost of lunch. Midlothian resident and Radford University senior Megan Bailey has launched a fundraiser in honor of her brother, Thomas Bailey, who passed away in December. Thomas was a junior at James River High School and enrolled in the culinary arts program at Chesterfield Technical Center. Since lunch was her brother’s favorite time at school, Megan has started a campaign to provide funds for local elementary students who may be in need of extra money to pay for a hot lunch. The goal is to raise $200 for each cafeteria and currently, over $1,100 has been raised, benefiting six local cafeterias. Robin Byrd Robin Byrd UNCF has announced that Chester resident Robin Byrd has joined the organization as area development director for the Virginia Campaign. Byrd is responsible for engaging donors, leveraging key relationships, establishing short and long-range goals and conducting comprehensive, cost-effective annual fundraising campaigns. A former business education teacher and vocational program specialist for Petersburg City Public Schools, she also served Chesterfield County Public Schools as business and community partnership specialist and was an ex officio board member for the Chesterfield Education Foundation.
