David Ellena David Ellena County principal named best in state

The Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals recently named Tomahawk Creek Middle Principal David Ellena the 2018 Outstanding Middle School Principal of Virginia. As the state nominee, Ellena is now eligible to be named National Principal of the Year. Ellena has been recognized for the innovation and creativity he has encouraged at Tomahawk Creek. Tomahawk Creek was one of the first schools in the region with a makerspace, where for several years students have been making prosthetic hands for people to use. Ellena has been in public education for 34 years. He started as a physical education teacher in 1985 and has served as principal of Tomahawk Creek Middle for seven years.

Education

Elizabeth Davis Middle Principal Ed Maynes has been named Chesterfield County Public Schools’ recipient of the 2018 R.E.B. Award for Distinguished Educational Leadership. The R.E.B. Awards for Distinguished Educational Leadership recognize central Virginia principals who go beyond day-to-day demands to create an exceptional educational environment for students and staff members. Maynes started working for Chesterfield County Public Schools in 2005 and served as a language arts teacher, a dean of students and an assistant principal prior to being promoted to principal of Davis Middle in 2015. Ettrick Elementary Principal Dr. Randi Smith was Chesterfield County Public Schools’ other finalist for the 2018 R.E.B. Award.

Penny Elizabeth Humphries’ rendition of “God Bless the USA” earned her the title of Senior Idol at the 8th Annual Senior Idol competition held at Victory Tabernacle Church of God on Friday, May 4. The first runner-up was “Miss Kitty” Fowler, singing “Once a Day,” and Gil Edwards was named second runner-up with his performance of “The Wind Beneath My Wings.” New to the Senior Idol this year was the addition of a Teen Idol Competition. The title of the first-ever Teen Idol was awarded to Franshelsa “Frankie” Paypa, a sophomore at the Appomattox Regional Governor’s School, following her performance of “Right Round” on the violin. The first runner-up was Adam Jones, a sophomore at Clover Hill High School, who performed “Lands End” from “Pirates of the Caribbean” on his cello.

Government

The Meadowdale branch of the Chesterfield Public Library is looking for volunteers to help build and maintain the new community garden located at the library at 4301 Meadowdale Blvd. Ask a Meadowdale staff member for more information or call 318-8778.
