Graphic Designer

The Chesterfield Observer in Midlothian is seeking a graphic designer to join the weekly newspaper with a circulation of more than 60,000. The Observer, established in 1995, is a locally owned, independent newspaper serving Chesterfield County.
Job duties include:
Work with editorial staff on the production of a weekly newspaper.
Participate in editorial meetings to discuss content and art for the upcoming issue.
Create a layout showing editorial content space and ad placement for review prior to printing.
Design web content for editorial and marketing needs.
Produce magazine quality layouts for special sections and a yearly guide to Chesterfield County.
Take on photography assignments to support news coverage including cover stories.
Support the sales team by creating print marketing materials and media kits.
Produce high-quality ad designs for clients.
Work quickly and  efficiently while adhering to strict weekly print production deadlines.
Prepare and upload files for printing.
Work directly with printers.

Freelance Reporter

The Chesterfield Observer is seeking to expand its talented team of contributing writers. This is a remote freelance position that offers competitive pay and flexible scheduling.

Qualified applicants will have prior reporting experience, a commitment to local news and journalistic values, working knowledge of AP style, and the ability to travel to and within Chesterfield County to conduct interviews as needed. Our ideal candidate is a curious self-starter who is comfortable researching and pitching story ideas, but who is also a team player and willing to pick up assignments as needed. We are particularly interested in writers who can contribute between one and four stories a month. Stories should be submitted on time, fact-checked and free of errors.

Our coverage is exclusive to Chesterfield County and ranges from hard news (government, schools, politics, law enforcement, land use and housing) to community news and features (profiles, events, business and restaurant openings, human interest pieces, sports features). We also publish two health care and two real estate special sections annually. Please let us know if you have particular areas of interest or expertise when applying. We do not currently have openings for opinion writers.
